The general public should understand that not everyone’s brains work the same way. Some of us need extra explanations, slower explanations, more time to process what is asked, and even extra instruction. Maybe it’s better to be given just one bullet point at a time instead of three to five. Reminders are helpful and important and are just the thing to ensure something gets done.
My memory sucks, it is still getting better to some extent, but it will forever be affected. So, I need reminders and routines to help me. Technology helps (alarms on my phone and air tags to find things) but I need people around me to provide reminders and support. Something that’s been a huge help for me is putting things back in the same place every time. Less time spent looking for what I’ve lost!
I get way more anxious than I ever experienced before and it’s harder for me to focus. I now show some of the traits that are traditionally associated with ADHD traits than I ever had before my accident. Focusing for extended periods is harder. I still struggle with impulsivity and had no impulse control for the first months. It’s still something I’m working on. The main issue is I see a cool ad for something, and even if I don’t need it, I’ll buy it. I am a marketing professional’s dream because I fall for everything. I need understanding and patience from customer service and anyone helping with the return process.
We must stay aware of the different ways someone’s brain might work. Neurodivergence simply means our brains work differently and we need those around us trying to understand. We often may not need much, but support helps!
